Zuhayr ibn Abi Sulma, War, Poetry, Pre-Islamic Eraالملخص
This study examines the theme of war poetry in the poetry collection (Diwan) of Zuhayr ibn Abi
Selma. It discusses the poet's life and explores the influence of his environment and upbringing
on his poetry and its various themes. The study then focuses on its primary objective: analyzing
the representation of war in his Diwan. It aims to examine Zuhayr's life and upbringing, identify
the impact of his background on his poetry, analyze the theme ofwarfromdifferentperspectives, and investigate the influence of the desert environment on the vocabulary of pre-Islamicpoetry,
particularly war poetry. The study adopts the descriptive-analytical approach andreachesseveral
key findings. Among the most significant are: the lineage of Zuhayr was a matter of
disagreement, as was the case with many pre-Islamic poets; Zuhayr was among the earliest
poets to advocate for peace and openly condemn war during the pre-Islamic era. His poetry
reflects a clear comparison between the conditions of peace and those of war. The images he
employed in criticizing war were justified by his strong belief in preserving blood ties and
kinship. Zuhayr ibn Abi Sulma was not exceptional in his view of peace and war; rather, his
understanding reflected the prevailing Arab perception of his time. He demonstrated remarkable
skill in depicting war, employing both direct and indirect, explicit and implicit literary
techniques. The study recommends further in-depth research into the various poetic themes
addressed by Zuhayr, given his distinguished status among pre-Islamic poets, as well as broader
studies of war poetry in the pre-Islamic period and other historical eras.
