This study aims to analyze the role of Sudan’s neighboring states—namely Egypt, Chad, South
Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and the Central African Republic—in prolonging or containing the
war during the period 2023–2025. Employing a descriptive and comparative geopolitical
analytical approach, the paper examines the political, military, and humanitarian positions of
these countries, identifies the mechanisms of their involvement or mediation, and interprets
their actions in light of their respective national interests and security concerns.
The findings reveal that the neighboring countries’ responses have been far from uniform; while some states have indirectly contributed to prolonging the conflict by supporting one side
or by failing to control cross-border movements of arms and fighters, others have sought to
contain the crisis through mediation and humanitarian initiatives. The study concludes that the
absence of effective regional coordination, coupled with the limited capacity of the African
Union and IGAD mechanisms, has exacerbated the crisis and hindered collective peace efforts.
The paper recommends adopting a comprehensive regional framework based on mutual
interests and collective security, to transform neighboring countries from negativelyinfluencing
actors into constructive partners in promoting peace and stability in Sudan and the wider
region
