الملخص

Arab literature defined the art of lamentation as a literary purpose in its poetry
and prose. It is a form of expression that reflects the nature of the political
fluctuations that swept through the eras of rule at different stages. The study dealt
with lamentation in Abbasid Arabic poetry, and this warm lamentation and sad
lamentation confirms the greatness of the loss and the enormity of the matter. The study aimed to examine the poetry of lamentation and know what poets created of
sad, crying poetry that tears hearts apart. The study followed the descriptive
analytical approach. The study concluded that lamentation emerges from an
experience. A profound cruelty that goes beyond private personal pain to the
suffering of public tribulations. A new trend has emerged in the elegies of Muslim
poets based on religious values, which are represented by acknowledgment of
God’s will. The poetry of lamenting cities comes from passionate emotion, a hot
conscience filled with pain, and a sincere feeling on the part of the poets
themselves towards their countries and homes, as they are the birthplaces and
meeting places of loved ones (Amr bin Abdul Malik said: (Who struck you, O
Baghdad, with the evil eye? **** Were you not the apple of the eye in the past?
The poets who excelled in the poetry of lamentation used historical incidents, as
there are many of them, which indicates their awareness and familiarity with them.
The study recommends examining lamentation in Abbasid prose in order to
complete the picture of this Abbasid literature in general, as it is a literature with a
wealth of material and a variety of topics and artistic forms that have not yet been
comprehensively studied.
